About Doppler Test

In a Doppler test, high-frequency sound waves are used to examine the flow of blood through veins and arteries. The tracked sound waves are then interpreted into graphs or images via the connected computer depending on the type of Doppler test.

Unlike the other imaging techniques like CT or MRI scans, the Doppler test is a completely harmless and risk-free test as it doesn’t involve any magnetic radiation during the scanning process. It takes only thirty minutes to one hour and the results of the doppler test are also available to the patient as soon as the test is completed.

Before the process, a gel is applied in the region of the suspected blood clot followed by a transducer is pressed on the gel and moved gently along the blood-flowing vein to get the image of the blood vessels. You will be asked to remain still throughout the process to yield accurate results. Once the test is done the gel is cleaned from the area.

Types of Doppler Test

  • Continuous-wave Doppler: The flow of blood in the vessels is analyzed by the pitch change in the sound wave. The doctor will examine the process thoroughly and look for a change in pitch of the sound waves which represents a blood clot on the particular region of blood flow.
  • Duplex Doppler: Regular ultrasound techniques are used to create images of the blood vessels and the tissues/organs surrounding them. Apart from this, the sound waves are used to create a graph showing the direction and the speed of blood flow.
  • Colour Doppler: In a color doppler test, the images of the analyzed blood vessels are created, showing the direction and the speed of the blood flow. 

Why is a Doppler Test Prescribed?

Your doctor may recommend a Doppler Test if they suspect any of the following regarding your medical case:

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): If you are a smoker or obese you are most likely to have DVT. DVT is common in people above the age of 50. Generally, the blood clot formed in the vein due to Deep Vein Thrombosis makes the surgery procedure riskier as it is located deep inside the body.
  • Superficial thrombophlebitis: It is highly likely that you have superficial thrombophlebitis if the vein bulges along with the skin or if the skin over the vein darkens. However, this can be cured quickly say within a couple of weeks but the stiffness in the vein will be felt over a period of time and takes more time to normal.
  • Atherosclerosis: While atherosclerosis is mainly caused due to aging it can also occur because of family history, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, and lack of exercise.
  • Thromboagniitis obliterans: Buerger’s disease is the other name called for Thromboagniitis obliterans. Thromboagniitis obliterans are commonly seen in men who smoke cigarettes or consume tobacco over the age of 40. While there is no cure for this disease it can be prevented from progression if the consumption of tobacco is stopped.

  • Metal objects like jewelry, watches, piercings, credit/debit cards are to be removed from the body/clothes before the test.
  • Take off the hearing aids, eye lenses if any.
  • No hairpins, pens, pocket knives, safety pins, metal zippers are to be taken inside.
  • If you are a smoker it is advised to stop smoking 4-5 hours before the test.
  • Fasting for 6-12 hours is required and drink less water if the test is to be done on your stomach.
